Norman Rockwell was missing something
Where's the drunk uncle in Rockwell's iconic Thanksgiving painting?
If you have one of "those" uncles (or other relatives), this Thanksgiving is probably going to be very trying.
So, how do you deal with drunk uncles? I'm not an expert but my late father and I were polar political opposites, so this is what I suggest:
- Get a little tipsy too. Just enough to be relaxed, but not enough to get angry (note: be careful doing this if you're an angry drunk - you know who you are)
- Keep the TV on all day, nice and loud. However, it must either be sports, or classic movies. No news!
- Proactively steer the conversation to other topics, like how nice your new napkins are.
- Make everyone comfortable. Have lots of throw pillows on the couch (another great conversation starter). [Don't give in to the temptation to actually throw the pillows.]
You can buy beautiful napkins, throw pillow covers, picture frames, and other things to spruce up your home for the holidays from Ceto Home in Petaluma. Buy it on ShopLocally and pick it up at their cute downtown store or have it shipped to you.
And you might like to know that Ceto Home's goods are made by experienced artisans in a studio committed to sustainability and inclusivity. They're also paid a living wage, have paid time off, and are provided private medical insurance. And the pillow cases are made with GOTS Certified Organic Dyes, as well as printed on 100% Biodegradable Cotton or Linen.
However, you may want to skip telling your drunk uncle that.
